Job Summary:
Provides family intervention support within justice, child welfare, and other systems for child and youth victims of violence, sexual assault, abuse and other crimes. Provides information on child and youth development in relation to trauma and understanding a strengths-based approach. Coordinates communication among multi-disciplinary teams on behalf of child, youth and family case files, ensuring alignment and understanding for the purpose of collaborative care. Assists with navigation of criminal justice and child welfare systems.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related Human/Social Services field
- Two (2) years’ recent directly related experience working with children, youth and adults in crises and in the justice system.
Job Skills and Abilities:
- Capable of working independently and in a team setting.
- Knowledge of sexual assault, and domestic violence dynamics.
- Knowledge of Child & Youth Development
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of trauma, trauma-focused approach, attachment theory, & family systems
- Valid Driver’s License and reliable vehicle with appropriate insurance.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conducts client intake with children and youth and/or their caregiver by obtaining relevant demographic and case information, assisting the client to complete intake forms and explaining the Centre’s policy on and limits to client confidentiality. Gains consent of the caregiver for coordinated case management activities.
- Coordinates the case management process by engaging multi-disciplinary teams to share information and discuss specific cases. Follows up with partners to ensure that action items are complete and no gaps in service exist using a high degree of tact and diplomacy with best interests of the child or youth at all steps.
- Assists parents, as relevant, with the development of healthy parenting, routine building, and socioemotional skills in relation to child and youth traumatic experience
- Supports youth as appropriate in healthy routine building, and socioemotional skill building in relation to trauma and the impact of negative life experiences
- Supports clients’ interests and rights by performing duties such as liaising with police, child welfare, Crown Counsel and other systems in order to coordinate service provision, obtain status updates on cases and advocate for the client as necessary. Acts as liaison between the client and the Centre by communicating thoroughly the recommendations of the Centre’s multidisciplinary team, court outcomes and other information in order to ensure clients are well informed of their rights, system processes and outcomes.
- Provides accompaniment and advocacy to clients with the judicial, child welfare, social services, medical and other systems by providing information about their rights, bringing forward their needs and requests, ensuring that appropriate legislation is being followed and escalating issues to the appropriate services as required.
- Works collaboratively with CYAC staff, Victim Services personnel and multi-disciplinary partners, including but not limited to Indigenous communities to provide ongoing case management to clients of the CYAC.
- Provides emotional and practical support to caregivers of the child and youth clients of the Centre through active listening, debriefing and providing relevant developmental information. Provides referrals to support services for caregivers as deemed necessary through assessing their needs.
- Collects and maintains statistics for the CYAC and prepares and submits reports on CYAC activities as required by the Program Coordinator, funder and CCS.
- Provides ongoing feedback to the Program Coordinator on the services of the CYAC and the multi-disciplinary team in order that the program can be evaluated and adjusted as necessary.
- Develops and maintains relationships with community professionals in order to enhance case coordination activities and in order to provide information on community agencies to clients. Initiates liaisons with community agencies as required by each client's case.
- Provides presentations and public awareness about child abuse, child sexual assault, developmental psychopathology and other crimes against children and youth and the services offered by the Centre.
- Performs other relevant duties as required.
General:
- Wage rate as per BCGEU Collective Agreement, Family Support Worker, Grid Level 12 - $29.17 per hour (Under Review) plus health and dental benefits.
- This position requires Union membership.
- This position is open to all persons.
- This position requires successful completion of a criminal record check.
- This position reports to the Advocacy Services Coordinator
